President Obama Destroyed Fox News’ Coverage Of Poverty With One Line: “Very rarely do you hear an interview of a waitress, which is much more typical, whose got two kids and is doing everything right but still can’t pay the bills.”
Instead, President Obama shared, “Fox News suggests that the poor are sponges, leeches, don’t want to work, are lazy, and undeserving…and it’s still being propagated today.”
Once again President Obama is right! It’s just simply not true that poor people are “leeches” or that poverty is a choice. Newsflash: No one prefers to live in poverty. Come on Republicans, can’t you think of a better argument to hang your entire economic narrative on? If poor people choose to be poor why do so many homeless people stand outside and beg for money? Wouldn’t they prefer to sit at home and “leech” (if that’s even a verb)?
The real crux of the problem here, as President Obama so eloquently noted, is that people who watch Fox News all day have a warped perception of poverty. You would think that people are just poor because they want to be, that they are somehow less valuable to our society than billionaire titans of industry; that the janitors, bus drivers, or trash collectors of America are of no material value to our country. Poverty is real. Hunger is real. Why do so many so-called “devout” evangelical Christians align themselves with a party whose central tenants are so antithetical to the love thy neighbor, help the poor, and heal the sick ethos of biblical teachings?
Sorry, Fox News, but you got DESTROYED here by POTUS. Good luck next time. Obama-1 Fox News-0
